From the Valley of Death to the Cradle of Life

Post by cornettracing80 »

Well....i have decided its been long enough exploring the mysteries of the darker side as with the turantula...now i have decided to visit the rainforest.
I am saving for a "Exo Terra Mayan Rainforest habitat kit"..until then i have a terrarium set up in Earl's cage...emptied all the dirt out and started all over...bottom layer is "Hydroballs"....then a coconut shell substrate....its 78 degrees farenheight and 80% humidity inside.
i am trying to get the hang of this before i go out and get the poison dart frogs i want....maybe a salamander....terrarium/vivarium is the new craze in my brain....i really like the aquarium/terrarium mixes i have seen online.
heres my "mock up trial terrarium"...until i get my exo terra set up.

and what goes in it:

the hemostats are a tool, not for smoking dope :|
the ambient humidity is 40% and it is winter here ...so i started during the hard season but it is going ok...day 4 had mold all over my moss :x ..but i fixed that problem...the haze on the tank is condensation from the humididty.
the only thingi dont have yet is a ultrasonic humidifier that creates a "fog" inside..i am getting one asap as i now have to mist by hand....more to come
:D

i found out my idea of lowering the humidity to stop pinhead(baby crickets) infestations did in fact kill earl....by the book on my terrarium.... :|

Wow Steve .. You amaze me :D

What cool hobbies you have 8-)

I would love an 8' sea aquarium - but I need to make sure I am staying in the house long enough to enjoy it (not easily moved :? )

Never enough time

i really like those saltwater aquariums as well.
very pretty!....i had a salt tank one time...had some clown fish that lived inside a sea anenome..it was purple.
you know the weirdest part was that darned anenome would "run" across the tank..more like roll..but i had no idea they could move like that!!!.
its a bit harder to maintain that fresh but not too much.very pretty!

i've always been told that saltwater tanks require A LOT of work. are you saying they arent that bad? what do you think it costs you to maintain a salt water tank?

my friend had a salt water tank, it was custom made and over 8ft long...stunning. They must have spent literally thousands £, and were really carefull with it, but ine day the water was just off and it killed everything. Now they have converted it into an home for water lizards, half tropical forest effect, half pond, with rain and mist facilities and everything (again stunning). But they wouldn't go back to marine again, as it really isn't easy or cheap, and they really spend a lot of time dedicated to their animals
