Re: Oli's Puzzle Blog

Post by Paradox »

After some expertly drawn ( :P )diagrams from Allard I have managed to put together my own version of the 3-Card Burr out of clear plastic playing cards:

The measurements aren't anywhere near as perfect on the originals, but I'm working on it. I just need to find a scalpel...

I know of about four you could use. You'd have to come to the US though.

Ali's been kind to me and loaned me more puzzles yet again! :D

Including:

The build quality far exceeded my expectations. If you'd be expecting something of the same quality to the King & Queen then you'd be pleasantly surprised! The Rook seems to be fully milled from aluminium block, which is waaaay better than the cast metal used for the King & Queen.

Does anyone here know how to input tray and box packing puzzles into Burrtools by any chance?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

....can't you define them as pretty flat burrs... so the pieces are are height 1, tray is height 2 with a solid floor, and a lip on the second storey - then set the target as the tray plus the rest inside the tray all variable voxels - should work... not sure if it'll deal with weird angles properly or how you'd get odd sized pieces or trays (like things involving square roots ... ;) )

that help?

Ah right, that does sound about right.

I'm guessing that would only work for solutions where the piece voxels are in line with the tray voxels, is that right?

I'll give it a go when I get home and see what happens. Thanks Allard!

Yup, works as allard suggests.

There are many many puzzles and non burr problems can be solved in burr tools if you have the patience.

Just treat the tray like a packing puzzle which burr tools can solve easily enough but rather than the solution being deep, it's shallow.

You don't even need to define the tray as really what you want is the inside of the tray, so just a square/rectangle with the same area of the combined pieces.
