Here's my pretty simple setup for mapping. Works quite well. Works a bit better with a pen as they are heavier than a pencil and ink transfers a bit darker than pencil.

Thanks for that picture, I like that setup very much!
The 'auto map' technique I used completely changed the way I visualized the maze and turned my focus from feeling and thinking my way through to just following the pencil along the path as already drawn. I was not particularly fond of the change. Time to begin working on something new!
