I photocopied a ruler and printed it out. It sounds stupid, but having a paper ruler that can wrap tightly around the shaft is incredibly helpful. It also turns out that using millimeters rather than inches is much easier. Surprising I know.

My maps consist of a 15x9 grid of squares and each square is 5mm x 5mm. things work out very well and so far my maps are fairly accurate

my maps are of 0.5mm resolution, with a scale of 5:1. My great accomplishment though was making a radial ruler that makes both X and Y dimensions on graph paper the correct scale!

Haha I use degrees. 10 degrees is one square on my graph paper and there are 60 degrees in each flat side of the hexagonal metal end.
