this requires a little bit of work still. it has a yellow tint to it which it picked up from the mold, so i'll have to give it a quick sanding with some plastic polish. and then it'll be almost perfect. there are some tiny air bubbles, but the are almost all at the ridges which help make the ridges stand out better.

shapeways was much too expensive! that would have cost me over $1000USD. Probably closer to $1000GBP! I had a friend create the 3D graphic in Texas and then had his 'buddy hookup' knock 'em out in NorCal. Still cost us $650 though.

Next is the retooling an casting the molds. cost there... $950! :o

As for the clear, i was just impressed it came out at all as i've never done anything like this before. it still needs a little work though...

Since i'm having the bits reproduced at a toy studio (the same guys that make the World of Warcraft figurines) they will be beautiful masterpieces made with each bit in its appropriate color (red, sky blue, & yellow). Also, my friend doing the work there is going to attempt to recast the clear for free. i hope it all turns out well!

if you can print hollow, shapeways isn't bad at all...

doing a 3" version hollow was $110 plus S&H for the set. Mine is 5", hollow, and much higher quality.

an idea - a transparent sleeve!

Post by martin0173 »

Was just looking at my opened maze (blue) and was thinking how good the machined maze looked. Would be great if you could buy a transparent acrylic sleeve for the maze to use after you had opened it and see how it all works as you twist and turn!

That would be a brilliant idea! I would certainly buy a few.

Obviously they could only be used after you have solved the puzzle. They would also be potentially a way to display the mazes after they have been done.

If you are reading the forum, Chris, then give this some serious consideration. An acrylic stand to go with it would just top it off nicely.
