They are a very good fantasy sci-fi read. And, that the hero is actually a heroine ... is very cool. They're definitely worth reading if you liked potter. I will say this. The first book took some time to get into; do not give up it is worth the wait, then the next 2 will FLY by... but force yourself to keep reading it. The payoff is worth it.

BTW, the whole killing god thing is as sacrilegious, in my view, as are the sorcerers and witches in HP.

So a few people on here were saying this book was about masonry, and i mentioned that there are 5 'other' orginizations included in the book. I didnt know why masonry was getting alll the attention and none of the others were. From what I have been told from other masons that have read/are reading the book is that those 'other groups' are all part of the masonic family. masonic orginizations include, but not limited to Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shriners, Order of the Easter Star, Demolay, Job's Daughters (pronounced jobe, not job), etc... Unlike many other books and movies, nothing masonic is 'revealed' in this book.

Again, I haven't read it, this is all jus hearsay from fellow masons.

just the little part about "TIES" in the workplace made me freak
this book delves into something i have been experimenting with for many years and have been told i am crazy many many times.
example: I have taught myself how to stop an episode of hiccups through meditation....i can also usually do the same with headaches.....i STRONGLY believe we are quite capable of numerous abilities,if we believe we can strongly enough.
The way that certain "tasks" begin to work out the way we wish they would after becoming intensly aggrevated with the task....ever have that happen?....another example:while running my printing press in the past i would notice that it will work fine as long as i focus on it and envision what i want it to do exactly....the moment i start to focus on lets say a crossword,the press stops working properly...that is until i focus on it once again...coincidence?....these kind of subjects give solidity to the myths of magic....think of this way:POWER WORDS
"Stop"
"FIRE!"
why do people gasp when someone says verbally "I wish you would die!"
because there is an actually powerd word die....we just dont know it anymore....AvadaKadavra?......
the reason this theory of mental power doesnt work for the majority is because they have locked their abilities...they have power word locked their abilities ...understand?...probably not.
because right now you are saying "thats ****" so the power word theory would dictate that for you this is now "****" and you have in effect rendered this "unoperational" for yourself....
the episode of the twilight zone where the boy turned the man into the jack in the box is an exagerated version of this theory.
the evil eye?.....same idea.....
what if the next time someone told you "GO TO HELL!"
you found yourself standing in hell?
if this is indeed an ability locked inside us human beings ,i agree,we could not weild it properly....maybe someday we will be "enlightened" enough to use the other 90% of our brains we dont use now...maybe someday.
i can not bend spoons....but i can "predict" my families "wants" alot.
many many of you use these abilities daily and say "that was lucky"...or "I just knew".....
my favorite power word is Love
my least favorite power word (that works too well for my liking)is HATE
i know all of dans book is not totally about this but i had an idea for a book about power words and the existance of moden day "magic".
so in a nut shell,there is a chance that cars,jets...gasoline....all things..
only function the way they do because we want them too....

(some power words we created and embued with the powers it has,everyone knows the "N" word...this power word has been given the power by the victims of its useage in my opinion.its more a "trigger" word now....i never really have understood this,as getting mad envoked its power,and getting mad confirms its meaning.....when i am called a "honky" i smile and say "yep" because i am proud to be in the group/race that i am...as i would be if i where an african american.I know that honky is negatively used but it doesnt make me freak out.news flash:racism is over...there's no "man holding you down"...Obama is proof,you can be anything you want to be....there are no more excuses)

so to close...maybe humans should be WAY more carefull about how they use the one God given gift that seperates us from all other animals.
The power of the spoken word that we do use to PRAY may hold far more power than we thought.
or maybe we should use it more in a positive manner.Today ,tell someone they look pretty...they will then FEEL pretty....abracadabra

CR80: I know what you wrote sounds a little off the wall/weird, however I noticed when I was a kid that whenever I got a headache, I could focus on it and simply make it go away withing a couple seconds. I can still do this, however when I am really sick it is hard to focus the mind and this doesnt work so well.

The mind is a powerful thing. Look at prayer. Large groups of people focusing on one thing, and it often times happens. I watched a History channel show on the human mind. theres actually a group of people that can take a human skull put it on the table say 10 feet away from them, reachout towards the skull and focus on squeezing it. after 20 or 30 minutes of intense focus, the skull cracked. how many people could do that with their hands, let alone their minds.

The brain is a electrical generating machine and i believe theres a lot to unlock with it. IDK if we'll ever see Jedi's but simply believing seems to go a long way.

3 years ago Rabbit i'd have said that was totally whack .. However, I do concur - there is much that can be effected physically both positively and negatively by altering one's outlook and thoughts. I'm completely on board with this idea and think that much of our ills & successes can be traced back to how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

Man, that CR80 guy, what a freak... oh wait, sorry.

Psychokinesis is not a modern term by any means, and it is also the term for what you guys are talking about. It is most commonly associated with Telekinesis since they were interchangeable terms at one time.

I have no doubt that people are capable of healing others and themselves as well as being able to manipulate objects and random events with their mind. It's like blue car syndrome, if you focus on something you notice it everywhere. It's why people sometimes call someone only to hear on the other end how that person was just thinking about them.

Our brains send out waves that can be read, who is to say that through focus and concentration that we can not control the direction and intent of those waves?

Also, about His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass Books), if you wife is worried about them killing god, then hopefully she is not hypocritical and likes the Narnia series. After all they kill the lion who is no doubt god based on the reading only to have him come back because they essentially did it wrong.

I have read both series (Narnia and Dark Materials) and if you want an adult read then go for Dark Materials, if you want a children book, then read Narnia. It seems to be the only real difference. Oh, and the movie is a crap version of the book, even though it was still a good movie. Nothing like Eragon which was just a **** movie altogether while The Inheritance Trilogy is just fantastic. Christopher Paolini should be allowed to punch the director and producer and anyone else who turned a great book into a bag of ass movie in the face every day until someone comes along and makes a decent adaptation based on the vision of the books.

so i was scrolling through the off topic forums looking to see if a topic was created yet regarding something, havent found it so i will b making it within the hour followign this post, and i stumbled across a topic speaking about the dan brown book.

First off, I want to say I am a huge Dan brown fan and I loved his books ever since I first started off with Digital Fortress. Second Favorite from him btw. After reading the main four, my english teacher told me about the new Dan Brown book The Lost Symbol. So i figured I would check it out. I read the book and I fell in love with it. It talked about so much stuff I never even knew of.

When I came to college my first year, I decided to try and become a Mason. Age 18 I might add, so I would have been one of the youngest people to ever join the Freemasonry Brotherhood. I was attending the 2 week meetings and I was loving the people there. They were extremely nice, and they loved my company from the moment I started coming.
So I figured I would try and get a petition. I asked around to see if someone would start one for me, and guess what. About 10 people i asked, all of them wanted me in. So I figured it was not going to be long before I made it into the first rank.

I then realized a few weeks later I did not have the money for it, so I gave up. But it wouldve been awesome to be one.
