I see tape on you silver? How exactly are you using the tape to map? I had some on the bolt portion but havent tried putting it on the sleeve

That is an optical illusion based on a combination of lighting, placement of the teeth, and point of focus.

I number my puzzles twice in order to increase accuracy. I line the puzzle up to what I call the zero point - when you can no longer turn the core, it is in the full start position. Starting from there, I number the edges of the core clockwise - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The dot on the sleeve is always 0. I then draw rays from those points out to the sleeve, where I repeat the numbers identically. My map is drawn double sized from 0 to 6 and 0 to -6. I overlap each end by 2, so I have a 0 and 1 on each end past the 6. This allows me to keep a very accurate map that always has a frame of reference for note taking. Most of the time lining up the sleeve 0 with the numbers on the core. However, sometimes I find it useful when trying to think of new things to rotate the sleeve so a different number is face up to me. This allows me to look at my map and use the combined frame of reference to know where I am, as my map changes with my frame of reference and the difference between the sleeve and the shaft. This also lets me create an extremely accurate map that when laid over the shaft lines up with it perfectly.

That said, I only map when I cannot think of anything else to try and need to improve my visualization of the puzzle. I am usually fairly accurate on my visualization, but I do not always line up the orientation of the draft correctly.

And my method for doing the topography of the puzzles I will keep mostly secret, but can say that it involves a finely tuned torque tester and some math.

My theory is that as long as we are not peaking into or forcing the maze, everything we do to solve it is legitimate. On the other hand, I have no idea if I would be able to solve the purple without any tools.

I line up the shaft with the sleeve to a zero point. I number them based on where the points of the nut line up. That gives me a frame of reference for my map, no matter which direction I hold the maze.
