The puzzle I made and bought to the MPP3 has now got a name.
'give em, enough rope'

Graham (Afkan) is the third person to send in a photo of the correct solution!

Mini Revo-mini review

Post by allardwza »

So one of the fun things we got to play with at MPP3 (just in case you needed to be made a bit more jealous!) was a set of four Revo-mini’s made by Mark76 – he sent them along with a request that we give him some thoughts on them... :D

On the day, Karl (KB64) managed to open the Silver and then none of us could close it again – which was probably a good thing because Mark had built a jolly not-a-canyon into that thing  – now remember that the shaft is about a centimetre in diameter( :!: :!: ) – a few of us had fiddled around with it and got that dumbfounded look on our faces :? when we got to the not-a-canyon, and then promptly got no further... so to be honest, I was relieved it hadn’t been reassembled. [I’ve told Mark I reckon he should be proud of the engineering he put into his Silver.]

I didn’t get much time to play with them before or during MPP3 and then had a casual play around with the others during the course of the following week and realised that a casual play around wasn't going to solve any of them ... so I decided to have a serious bash at them on Sunday. I put some masking tape around them to mark up the traps etc. and had a trusty notebook handy for a map or two... (You should take that as confirmation that Mark has created a set of highly credible mini puzzles here.)

I did them in order:

On the Blue I mapped the main trap and the main rest line and let rip from there – I still ended up getting caught out a few times by the bridge at the end of the "first half" - nice little nod to the original there ... lovely little puzzle – and it’s only the size of a key ring!!

Green was up next - again I mapped the main trap line and then got fairly lucky by not falling off onto the main start line although I saw afterwards there are a few opportunities to do that! - Again a neat little challenge with a serious little bridge section, just like the original bigger brother...

I was dreading the Bronze after what I'd seen in the Silver mechanics - so I'd more or less convinced myself that it was going to be a full-on dynamic maze! I dropped in and immediately got wet(!) - wandered around the pool and drew a map noticing some interlocking trap lines and thought to myself that only a sod would expect you to walk between those – so, Mark76, you're a sod! 8-) I used my trusty Obsession trick of drawing directly on the shaft in soft pencil and then wandered around the traps - headed out to where I knew I had to go - assuming there weren't any dynamic bits - and only managed to fall into the start reset line once or twice before finding the exit ... VERY IMPRESSED when I saw the two pins come out and release the draw :geek: – Inside there’s a printed note saying “If this was edible, it would be the perfect product”. Well Mark, for the record - it doesn't need to be edible!

Thanks again for letting us play with your Revo-minis (and for giving me one!) – Tremendous work! ;)

I really appreciate all the feedback. :D

I was also wondering what you guys thought about the size? I know that as far as a keyring goes, the smaller the better. But as a workable puzzle would it have been too awkward if it was smaller? I don't have the precision tools or the skill to make it much smaller but if I did and the map was as complex as the blue obsession/extreme but a design you didnt already know, would it be too small to spend hours trying to solve? or is having a shorter simpler maze more appropriate for a keyring version?

Just curious. :?:
