What is your "Holy Grail" of puzzles?

Post by y2khappens »

What is that one puzzle that you would take to the deserted island or what
is that elusive puzzle that you would consider your "Holy Grail" of puzzling?

As a newbie to the puzzling world, at this time mine may be the #1 Popplock.

The problem with such a puzzle is that we can assume you are going to be on this deserted island for a while, in which case we can also assume that if this is the only puzzle you have to solve then you will still solve it comparatively very quickly. And once it is solved you will get nothing further from it.

The last time I heard this question posed I think one of the best answers given was a set of Tangrams, as the possibilities are endless.

I'd probably choose something like a burr in the shape of a life-size boat so that I could row it off the island and get back to my puzzles. :D

I actually think we have 2 questions here and they both have different answers!

My holy grail would be the set of Rocky's bolts and keys. They are something I have been lusting after for quite some time but haven't bought due to the very very high total cost! Hopefully one day not to far off I'll start the collection.

Second question would be what is your "dessert island" puzzle? I.e one to take away on a long trip. It might be my wife if I could also take some (a lot of) gaffer tape! :D OUCH! Sorry dear!
Other than that I would take a burr set - either Jack Krijnen's if I could get one or if Jerry McFarland completes his. There are also commercial sets available from Creative crafthouse or Philos.

Reason: let's get Jerry's name right...

Oli, i think you're digging into this too much

I think tangrams are a good idea but unless you have several different types with different shapes it could get boring after a while. but i guess that's why they said "a set of tangrams".

I don't think i have enough puzzles, or know of enough puzzles, to comment on the "Holy Grail" of puzzles, but the puzzle i'd take on a "dessert island" (well done kevin!!) would be the Tiros 18 piece burr. Mines in the post now, so i haven't played with it yet, but with 150 moves to remove the first piece, i assume it will keep me busy for quite a while. Either that or the Super Cubi Karakuri box (which i will own at some point!!) with 324 moves to open.

I've also bought 3 of Rocky's Bolts so far and will end up getting the set at some point, but i haven't received them yet so i don't know how good they actually are yet ;)

Great choice!

I have had a Tiros for a year now and still not opened it! I've reached 100 moves and can't finish it! Actually I sort of got bored and got side tracked by other stuff! One day I'll have to try again - in the meantime it does it des look good on display!

There is always the option of taking a Blue Pro onto the deserted island. After a few years of constant practise with no distractions you may be able to get a sub 60 second solve time.
