Foucaults Pendulum

Post by Gdamatov77 »

I just want to say a few simple words to describe the book.

Greatest book I ever read in m entire life!

I suggest it to everyone. No matter the age, what you are into, and what you like, it is an amazing book. Read it and let me know what you think.

621 pages of pure genius. Could be 623, more likely that, but I left my book at my house so I don't remember since it has been a while since I read it.

Huh? The Order of DeMolay is directed at youths interested in the Freemasons. Depending on where you live determines how old you can be to join the Freemasons. Now days most areas are 18 or 21, but it used to be as young as 14 or 16 - but depended on if you were born a Gentleman or not.

A commitment to an organization like that really requires a strong understanding of why you want to be there. Sure, it costs money, but that is part of what makes it such an elitist organization. :\

while Dan Brown has some good ideas, and comes up with good research, am I the only one here who thinks he's a hack writer? Both Da Vinci Code and this latest one were fun page turners, but really poorly written...

I thought there was an incredible sense of deja vu going through his books... I found them good holiday reading, but wouldn't describe any of them as good books. IMHO YMMV etc.

exactly... good for reading on a beach, but don't care if they get washed away w/ a big wave :)

now the latest "blockbuster" trilogy - the Girl w/ a Dragon Tattoo and others, I thought were both good reads and fairly well written...

Agreed, Dan Brown is very good at what he does including choosing and fitting (wedging sometimes) truths and half truths to his purpose/plot.
It's good fiction that's all, for better fiction see Umberto Eco (Foucault's Pendulum, Name of the Rose etc.) as mentioned by Gdamatov77 or Stieg Larsson (Millennium Trilogy) as mentioned by smiteo. It's sad that Stieg Larsson died after writing this series.
Also sad to see that Benoit Mandelbrot (father of fractal geometry) died this week.

mhuti is very right about umberto eco. he surpasses dan brown in many aspects, although i never got to fully reading name of the rose. I started it and got bored after like 2 chapters, so i need to get back to it. B foucaults pendulum is a must read. It will have you on the edge of your seat.

This is a very active post, I've just just been reading through some of the earlier pages. comments on some of the many threads;

The 'Dark Materials' series is essentially about the loss of trust/innocence and journey to adulthood this theme progresses through each of the three books. Anyone suggesting anti-god hidden or focused messages has missed the point and probably believes that we should all be controlled in a manner similar to that in 1984 (good book). Frankly, if anyone suggests you should not read a book for any reason then be very suspicious of their motives. If people kill people not guns, then you can hardly believe that books kill gods, if they exist.
As for 'Harry Potter' all I'll say is look at each page in any book compare the word count and level of conversion with other better written fantasy/science fiction authors of note. This series is a commercial not a literary phenomenon.

Perhaps we should start a book thread given the high level of interest in this thread.

2 well written fantasy series;
Wheel of time series (Robert Jordan)
Malazan Book of the Fallen (Steven Erikson & Ian Cameron Esslemont)

2 well written science fiction series;
Night's Dawn Trilogy (Peter F Hamilton)
Culture Series (Iain M Banks)
