Semi-spoiler:
At the end of Tron Flynn returns to reality and becomes the CEO of Encom. With money, resources, and knowledge, he sets up his own laser in his secret room in Flynns Arcade (note this is all in the first trailer). Flynn then travels between our world and the computer world frequently. With electricity flowing 1000 times faster than the human mind, he is able to spend a week in the computer world and be gone for only 10 minutes. (from HelloFlynn.com using secret access codes) While there he creates what is now Tron City and gives it the look it has now.
Watching the second trailer, Sam says to his father, "Its been a long time." (he hasn't seen his dad since 1989; 21 years) Kevin responds, "You have no idea" (21 x 1000... 21000 years stuck in the computer world. Trapped as a prisioner.)
Kevin lost his wife, Sams mother, when he was young, and created the world of tron in its present form in hopes that his memory could be used to recreate her as all things in Tron City are nothing more than his thoughts turned into reality.
Clu (v2.0) being the program of Kevn feels that he is the son of Flynn, becomes jealous that Kevin leaves to return to Sam in the real world. (remember sleeping for 8 or 9 hours in our world would mean Clu would be without his father for about one year.)
Tron the Betrayal is a graphic novel filling in all the gaps between Tron and Tron Legacy and has not been released yet, but based on the footage from the two trailers and the graphic novel "sneek peek" revealed at SDCC, we can guess that Tron, the savior of the first movie, while still the champion of the games, is now Rinzler, Clu's right hand man.
Meanwhile there is hinting that there is a virus in the system that threatens Tron City. Also with computer technology these days any files that can be damaged or erased can often times be reconsiled.
Roll that all into one package, filmed in 3D by one of the biggest CGI experts in the US while rolling in additional screenwritters from Pixar and doing a lot of reshooting should make this Sci-fi, drama, action movie amazing (not to mention the $200M budget). well at least in my mind!
I have been fortunate enough to get to know some of the actors, the director, producers, and some of the writers. over the few times that i've chatted with them, i really think even a guy like me, who knows just about everything a guy could know at this point, will still be thuroughly impressed and surprised.
