You'll still be able to get access to cool maps! And I think there are a few members who have modified the V1 obs to come all the way out...

FWIW, if it's a v1 black (I'm pretty certain it is) then I wouldn't even entertain the thought of modifying it. - it's one of the most sought after mazes.

As Naz said, once you have it open you can see the map in the open group :)

I'm pretty sure I was the first to modify my V1 obsessions. I've done this to all three of them, Blue, Green, and Black. While I can understand the desire to not make the modification and keep them in their original condition. If I were in the same situation today, I would still modify them.

The modification creates a groove in one end of the core which acts as an additional path to the very end of the internal deadend path. It has zero effect on the way the puzzle functions and does not create any shortcuts. It simply allows the core to be removed once the maze is solved. The only negative is the cosmetic issue of a groove in the end of the core.

One of the prototype obsessions I have is interesting. Chris had considered using his seven sided nut end for the obsession line. This prototype has the exact same groove that I made in my V1 obsessions. Chris tried to make it less noticeable by making the groove coincide with one of the edges of the nut.

This is evidence that his original intention was to make them removable. He then decided to abandon this feature and went with a non-removable version with symmetrical smooth ends. His final design for the V2 removable obsessions included an exit path that was hidden by the fact that the bottom of the groove was the same depth as the smaller smooth ends.

Knowing that Chris wanted his obsessions removable makes me feel better about my modification.

While the metal Black EX is ultra limited, the obsession V1 Black was not limited at all. There should be quite a few out there, but I don't know how many they made or sold.

I recently acquired a Black V1 Obs and after solving have modified it to open. Seeing as I have no intention of selling it (its a really fun maze) I felt it would only improve the product to be able to see the core. For me seeing the core is the reward for the hard work solving the maze :)

...you want to sell. Right? Spread some joy? No?! Banished! Be gone with you from this thread! :]

I finally set up email notifications on this thread last night, since I apparently missed a black v1 obs. Wake up to an email notification and that intro. So painful. Sleepy morning Ryan cannot take that kind of roller coaster.
