3D Printed Mazes

To satisfy my Revomaze fix, I'm considering designing some 3D printed custom mazes to play around with. I'd like to ask for some advice on the process. Has anyone attempted this in the past? Is standard PLA material advisable? Can the metal pin navigate a plastic maze safely or is there danger of easy breakage? What are the exact dimensions of the maze shaft? All help appreciated!
