Was thinking of bringing it on the plane.

The usual caution probably still applies. Instead of a grenade, the R2s look like land mines:-/

I despise airport security I guess I will leave it home. Figured if I worked on it during my flight I might gain some interest in it again.

Yeah Airplanes are for me one of the #1 spots for puzzling. Too bad all the puzzles I want to finish could be easily be assumed as something other than what they are.
If they take it from you at the security desk, that's a bummer. If someone sees you actually on an airplane fiddling with something frustratingly that looks suspicious (And ticks...) It could be even worse when they divert the plane to the nearest airport for a mechanical issue and send the local task force in to remove you from the aircraft.
...Or at least those are a few things I imagine might happen. Probably not worth it either way.

Im not sure what the R2's ship in, but having the original packaging and instruction booklet always allowed me to pass security. of course my package always gets inspected, but it looks legit. I find that puzzling with anything that takes dexterity only becomes more frustrating on the plane. my wait time is usually not long enough to make any serious progress, but for others it could be useful.
I'd say go early, if they tell you to ship it, send it back home. i find it very unlikely that they would confiscate it if you have packaging to go with it.

except the R2s (at least mine did) came in a generic padded envelope, no pamphlet or anything at all.
no logos anywhere.
