Honestly, sniping is why I hate eBay. Such a dishonest auction process.

If you're not involved though, it sure makes that last 2 minutes interesting...

Not really, it just makes me count the number of tossers that would get punched or shot at a real auction.

I have to say I like the way Nick Baxter's auctions run. If there's a higher bidder in the last 24 hours, then the auction is extended 24 hours. That continues until the lead bidder has held the highest bid for 24 hours.

Fair, and sniper bids are useless.

I have purchased and sold a few guns on the "gunbroker.com" auction site.
They give back 15 minutes if there is a bid under 15 minutes. You do have
to be watching the closing of the auctions but you have 15 minutes to decide
if you want to raise your bid. At least you won't be sniped that last second!!!

Agreed. I prefer auctions that add time with each last minute bid. Even five minutes makes a big difference, but a day is great.

That is actually a great way for an auction to run that way the item sells for whats it is worth and no one gets 'conned' out of item by someone sniping for a bargain!

What's dishonest about it? Since eBay uses a proxy bid system you bid the max that you would pay for the item. What difference does it really make if you bid your max early on or in the last second? If someone else bids their max and it is higher than yours then they are going to win it regardless.

What I don't get are these people who don't really seem to understand how eBay bidding works and place a low bid and then keep placing repeated bids higher and higher. If you have a price you are willing to pay then just bid it right off the bat (or wait and bid are the end, doesn't matter).

As I said above I have a snipe amount in mind that I'm willing to bid and pay. But the way things are going it may go above that amount before the end so my snipe bid wouldn't matter anyway because I have a max that I'm willing to bid.

If you get outbid by a snipe then it just means that you didn't bid high enough. That is no different then if you get outbid by anyone else during the course of the auction.

It sounds like you don't understand the finer strategy of eBay bidding.

The strategy I am most familiar with is to minimize your maximum bid from the very beginning. This has two purposes: (1) protection from dishonest sellers who have someone who will "up" your bid a hair each time, to see if you'll bid higher, (2) depend on someone else only putting in their min-max bid, rather than their max-max bid, and have you beat it as opposed to the max-max.

Furthermore, what your current maximum is may not be your overall maximum -- not everyone is a rational actor, and sometimes we think more. eBay doesn't let you get caught up in the heat of the moment because of the sniping.
