Lubricant for the revomaze?

Post by oyvind82 »

Hi, i´m new to this forum, and i cant seem to find any posts where this is mentioned.

When I first got my revomaze open it seemed like it was some sorts of light lubricant on the different parts in it.

I now have opened and closed it so many times that there is probably no lubricant left in the maze, i can tell since i can see the track i follow in the maze very easily.

Is there any recomenations for some kind of oil (or something else) to use in the revomaze so it reduses wear on the pins and the maze?
I really enjoid the puzzle and i want it to last many many years... :)

a light 3 in 1 type oil (gun oil works well also)
nothing too heavy and a little goes a long way ;)
glad you liked it.... ;)

I rubbed some graphite into the trap and the starting groove on my Blue. Just a little bit, seems to work well. Question is whether or not it'll cause more damage or not. I did it because it was feeling a little sticky after a friend had played with it for a few days [no idea what he did to it, but he didn't open it].

Not sure if that is the best thing to use .. but I figure it is what is used to lubricate locks, so it seemed appropriate.

Just becareful when you lub it that you don't create a suction in pin holes, it makes the final step more difficult!!!!!!

That's another reason why I used graphite.

Repost: Cleaning:

Old toothbrush and washing up liquid - pour some onto the shaft and give it s good clean all in the tracks. If you have tarnish on the shaft I use Autosol chrome cleaner paste - put a small amount on a tissue and remove the tarnish. Do this before washing with the toothbrush.

Allow to drain and dry (I use a hair dryer). Using a pencil, I push a small ball of tissue through the shaft centre to make sure its clean. Same process with the draw and pins.

The sleeve, I use WD40 and a soft polishing cloth (try to keep the label at 12 o'clock to ensure the spring does not come out. use your nail (yuk) or a cocktail stick between the outer sleeve grooves before the WD40.

Next push a wad of tissue through the centre. I then use 3-in-1 bike oil inside the sleeve place a small drip on both ends. Use your finger to spread the oil inside the sleeve and then pass the wad through again to ensure not too much oil is left on.

Once dry, reassemble the shaft as per instructions (if you wish to add a drop of oil, I suggest the drop goes in the first entrance. Once assembled - quick polish on the sleeve and you puzzle is as good as new.

Thx Rabbit - Having used just that exact method on all 4 now (the blue was the worst, I think because I didn't have the clean hands rule then) - I can say it works very very well.
