Whew .. made it on to the forums at last !

Post by ezamover »

Hi all,
I have been looking at this forum for a few days now and finally got approval to post !

Yay.

I haven't actually got to even see a physical revo yet but have been looking and reading posts madly.
You can also tell I am hooked already as I have ordered the CE set !.

Now .. some might think I am a little hasty, but I can see that this is one serious puzzle.
After trying quite a few "cheaper" metal ones and being a little disappointed with how quickly they are solved, I thought at least with this set I will get to a point where I am challenged. .... perhaps stumped ! (more than likely).

I also can see that this puzzle is going to be a classic. So even if I do ever have to sell it (god forbid) I would probably get my money back and perhaps even make a profit. (not my motive but it's in the back of my mind and is said frequently to the wife :-)

The other reasoning behind buying the whole set up front is shipping costs to Australia.
I figure I will probably be buying them all eventually anyway so just go for it.

And ... I get a nifty Titanium coloured one as a bonus.
And I earned a heap of bonus points too.
And Chris made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
And ... the Aussie Dollar is at an all time high against the pound.
And ... I don't have to pay the VAT.

Sorry .. getting a little excited here.... :-)

I did order it assembled and it is the gold plated one ... and yes I will be using it .... shock horror

I will be reporting back on how long the gold stays on.

Sorry about ringing you Chris ... but I am kind of hanging out for this !

Anyway .. better stop waffling ...
Hope to report back soon once I have actually achieved something .....!

Wow! Welcome to the forum!

And don't worry about sounding over-enthusiastic, around here we're pretty much all like that. :D

It will still be a little while yet till the CE sets are able to be shipped. Till then have you considered getting a Revo from the Revomaze Obsession series of puzzles? They are cheaper, available now, and will give you a really nice introduction to what you're up against. And even though they are plastic, the quality is superb!

Hi Paradox,
Thanks for the welcome.
To be honest ... I don't think I will be ever going for a plastic version.

One of the really big attractions for me in puzzles (apart from jigsaws ... lol) is that it has to be metal. And preferably machined metal not cast.
Not wood ... not plastic ... not stone. Metal only.

Metal never bends warps or gives in any way. (unless it's poor quality, badly engineered work).

I think it comes back to another fetish I used to have as a young man.
Brass lathe and milling work !
If you have ever made anything on a lathe or mill out of brass you will know what I mean.
It's just so dang satisfying. Brass is a joy to machine.
I love how close you can get the tolerances.
How shiny you can make the surface look.
How weighty the finished article feels.

I know it's got an aluminium outer .. but even that has special qualitys which appeal to my metal fetish. ANODIZATION .. one of the sexiest metal finishes on the planet. (IMO). What a finish !... never fades, rubbs off, or changes ... ever...... perfect.

I can see .. by all the videos I have watched that if it were me who was smart enough to invent this puzzle, then that's EXACTLY the way I would have made it.

Quality. No short cuts. Over engineer... then over engineer some more.

Chris has hit all my buttons here !

AND

It may be the only thing to hand when the zombie hordes attack so make it substantial I say !

So, No.... sorry plastic is not for me.

The biggest point is that some of the puzzles aren't available in metal. Black V2? Hard puzzle. Just... keep and open mind im saying. You're enthusiastic, yes, but don't be too hasty to shoot down the plastic. You'll have plenty to do for a while but eventually you'll want more. :P

...... also the plastic is machined on exactly the same machine as the metal (not moulded!) to ensure the tolerances stay the same. I agree with paradox and Naz that you would get huge enjoyment out of them and then you could sell them when your CE set arrives.

Even if you want to use the gold ones, you might think about testing the amout of force needed to come over some things cheaper.
My blue metal suffered a lot during learning......
Your Revos will thank you and live longer in good shape.

ezamover, I am like you. I have both the blue and black plastic ones, and all I can say is wow. They are really sturdy, and have a fair weight to them which I like.

As you are still new to revomazes I shall give you a little hint. You know you are solving it right when your hand starts to hurt.

id agree. as a CE owner as well, the Ce doesnt come with the black. pick up a plastic black to give you an idea of what is to come and train those hands before the "Olympics" start and your CE arrives.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Don't get me wrong.
I am sure the plastic versions are really great puzzles.

It's just that I enjoy the craftsmanship of a good quality metal puzzle just as much as the puzzle itself ....(maybe more) that's all.

I used to be into magic tricks (still am a bit) and the one's that really got to me were metal.
Like this one....

Still a classic ... still in my trick collection.

It's a bit like the opposite sex ... we all know what turns us on .... right ?
