Constantin Bovalis Lock #1

Post by Swyrm »

After weeks of waiting, I had the pleasure to find this morning in a parcel behind my door a strange puzzle called "Lock #1" from Constantin Bovalis, a very talented and young mechanical engineer.
It is a very surprising puzzle padlock made of 3D printed plastic which goal is not only to open it but also to free a coin locked on one of the face of the puzzle. To do so you will have to understand the very intricated gears inside the lock to find a way to solve it without touching with fingers (or tools provided...) the red parts!
This puzzle won the "Euclid" geometric award at last MAA puzzle competition (you know well some of the other winners: M. Toulouzas, Y. Demirhan, D. Namdarian, D. Klarskov/K. Jones and E. Alici)
All in all it is a very nice puzzle lock, intricated gears, sequential discovery, coin puzzle which will fit well in any puzzle collection and very different from all what you may have seen before, indeed Constantin is not a puzzle collector and doesn't think the same way than us about it, a very refreshing new point of vue of what a mechanical puzzles can be (and this "mechanical puzzle" term never was so well used)
You can contact him by email to: costa@bovalis.net.
