Recommend me a Makishi box

Post by 03SVTCobra »

This will be my first puzzle box. Id like a challenge but not something that is going to make me mad. I was thinking of starting with the 8 move but dont know if that will be too easy.

I don't think there's many people here who have Makishi Boxes (although a group of us have had 18 on order!). Oli did a good review of the 30 and 50 move boxes here which may be worth reading if you haven't already.

Someone, I'm guessing Oli, bought one along to MPP3 and while I didn't spend that long with it (I think food arrived) I didn't get very far with it... definitely not a standard puzzle box.

My guess is that if you've never picked up a puzzle box before and you'd just like to give one a go then go for the 8 move. However, as the 13 and 18 move boxes are only a matter of a few dollars more then it may be worth looking at them instead.

Here's a link to my review if you haven't stumbled across it already: Makishi Puzzle Boxes

Personally I'd recommend getting yourself a traditional puzzle box cheap off from eBay first. Something around the 10-20 move mark for around £20. This will give you a basic understanding of how a Japanese puzzle box works.

Then after this I'd jump straight into Makishi's 50 move puzzle box! It is a bit of a challenge but if you're only going to go for one of his boxes I'd make it that one, otherwise you may find yourself wishing later on that you got something more difficult.

Whatever you decide to go for by Makishi I guarantee you won't be disappointed. :)

Got to agree with Oli :D

I had a play with his 50 at MPP3 and I spent quite a while but did succeed in opening it 8-)

Not got any myself yet although I've got 3 on order

All of the above. Including three on order.

Definitely go with Oli's advice!! A small cheap box that will bring you joy and understanding and the Makishi 50 to follow will do just the same.

Your best bet is to contact Naomi (his daughter?). He only accepts payment via cheque or money order though, although I believe he is coming around to the idea of using PayPal... but not yet.

Did you wan't Naomi's e-mail?

sure, hopefully he comes around to pay pal. Dunno how easily he can cash a cheque from Canada.

Anyone know the price points of the boxes?
