well I did notice that, I thought that might be the reason, but I that would make the black pin pointless

Just think of the black pin as one of those stickers on top of screws that say "Warranty Void if removed"

I quite like the fact that the pin can be removed.

I like puzzles that reveal their inner workings on completion :D
