Don't know the answer to the question, but the MG on the top is definitely not the sign that it's an original - afraid I don't know anyone who has an original ... I can always ask Marcel when I see him, but that's many months off... {Just had a thought...James Dalgety might know... I'll get back to you in a week or two...}

That is all.

Indeed, James does have several of Gillen's originals.

I believe that the original chess piece puzzles have a sort of rough sand-blasted finish as opposed to the smooth finish on the B&P repros. I'm not 100% on the current value as they very rarely make it onto the market, but I'd take a guess that an original could well go for around $400-$500.

Here's an example of a couple of Marcel's originals from James' collection:

This doesn't include the very limited versions that were made by Marcel in solid brass.

I thought I read somewhere he was dead.
Obviously the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.

Tell him from me ... (Someone important in the puzzle world ? ) that I love his work.

Wouldn't have a clue about how the puzzles work, but I love how he made a puzzle into a functional object.

It would have been great if he had made a the whole chess set ....

P.S. Thanks for the update on values Oli.

Right, I think that's far enough off topic now (not that I didn't contribute).

This area is for making other collectors aware of current puzzle deals.

Melting Block is indeed a great little puzzle, I got one from Wil a little while back.
I bought a few copies for friends at work last Christmas (not off Etsy) which looked exactly like the version in that image (with the red block) and cost pretty much the same in £. I guess they're made by the same company but the ones I got were being sold under the name of Redstone Box.

I'm not sure what wood was used for the box, it smelt really nice but was very prone to cracking. The ones I got had been shrink wrapped and that applied enough force to snap the rim around the lid. It was an easy fix on both of them but I know someone else who had similar issues with this variant too.

Anyway, I'm not saying this isn't a good deal - it's a cracking puzzle for the price! But its maybe just something to be aware of if they're the same versions.

I have a copy from Tom Lensch in various exotic woods. Great puzzle, and a lot of fun to hand to friends.

There's a Japanese seller of puzzles boxes who's got a store on Etsy. Appears that his puzzle boxes are pretty reasonable, especially those with nested boxes. At least compared to the usual online retailers. He has a nice Bento box too which has gone down from $350 some days ago to now at $190.

That is Hiroyuki Oka of the Karakuri Creation Group.

I've ordered from him through Etsy before, and the service is superb. Definitely recommend him! :)
