Yep, they do need to match up. I made that mistake the first time as well.

And well done on opening the Cylinder!

Thanks! So second question would be if I have one assembled backwards (it came this way bought it secondhand) is it still possible to open? I'm assuming so since my guess would be assembly is the reverse of disassembly? Just that the puzzle seems to jam and I noticed the dots weren't aligned so I figured I'd ask the foremost authorities on all things Wil...

Exactly like you said, it's still possible to open by reversing the assembly. It's very easy to accidentally put it together the wrong way round. I've done it a fair few times myself.

So have you taken it apart for yourself yet? Or are you working on getting it apart for the first time?

Working on getting it apart for the first time. I'll let you all know once I've succeeded. I also purchased his 10 move and 6 move burrs and have solved / learned both of those. So once I get the cross apart I guess that means it's time to order more!

Yeah i showed my dad the internals of Wil's cross and then he went and assembled it in reverse which i didnt realize and i spent a couple of hours puzzling over why it wouldnt open almost to the point i was convinced it was broken before i realized the dots weren't lined up then it was apart in minutes, so its not problematic if the dots arent lined up its just there to make a repeat solve easier (if you pay attention to how the dots are lined up when you try to resolve it of course)

Well Alcyl could have been harder :o

Just turned up at work and I had it open in about 30 seconds :(

It took me longer to get it out of Wil's wrapping

Nice idea though 8-)

Same here!

It is a nice idea, and I like it, but I think it would've been better if the idea was implemented as part of another puzzle rather than just by itself.

Well, if you could hurry up a bit we'd all definitely appreciate it! ;)

We could do with some more UK based puzzle designers/makers. :D
