Regardless of how careful you are, you're going to wear on the plating as you explore these for the first time.

Edit: That being said, I've only ever had a plating issue with one of my puzzles, but that was a different issue all together. I just opened my silver (you're a lucky man) to examine the core closely for wear and it looks fine, even after the beating that it took at my hands. To be honest the gold plating may stand up just as well to the wear, but I would still go with nickel just to be safe.

Thus ends my humble opinion :D

Edit #2: I just realized that I have to re-assemble my silver
That's why I ordered Nickel. Although, if RevoGirl talks me in to ordering other Silver and Golds, then I could leave my Collectors Edition untouched, and so upgrade to Gold plating .......
Mmm Titanium :P ~~~~~~

I would like to see electrolysis plating with silver-infused carbon nanotubes.

When I ordered my Collectors Edition I asked Chris about the Gold plated shafts. This is the Question I sent him and his reply;

Are the gold editions pre-plated with nickel (for durability) before being gold plated?
[Chris Pitt] That would be the case as the initial electro nickel plating will harden the underlying brass maze. We are being advised by the plating company to get the best possible finish.

Does this answer your fears about the Gold Special Editions...

Yes and no. If you get a gold plated puzzle then I suggest you never assemble it, use it only for display purposes. If the gold plated ones are nickel coated beforehand the the puzzle will operate fine and will have the same lifetime as a standard one, but the gold plate will likely wear off along the track and at any points where the shaft touches the sleeve before you even get it open once.

I suggest gold plated mazes are for display purposes only unless you're either:
  1. loaded (and buy two gold plated sets)
  2. brave
  3. mental
Just my thoughts...

Chris

i barely have the money to buy a nickel plated CE, but when i do end up purchasing a CE, it will be Nickel plated most likely and for display purposes. I will not even attempt the TI, only the obsession TI when that comes out.

There is possibly one other option ... and ask Chris if he will send them uncoated. That would give you the raw brass shaft, just like the prototypes, and the handmade.

I get the feeling that will look really special. While Chris doesn't advertise this, perhaps asking nicely, he may be able to sort something out.
