I have a sneaking suspicion that may be wrong I want to bounce an idea off someone’s head without giving a possible solution. So if someone could message me it would be great

It looks like it will do the job. I think the diameter of the grip on the pen holder may be too small. I'm not sure if I should make it bigger or not.

I doubt you would do any damage to the maze itself...possibly bent the pin some which can be easily replaced. Guess you will find out once its open. Which maze was it?
