I attached a pic of the "scale" that i put on the sleeve to measure rotation. I have a trainer that i put on the core end with a black line as my indicator. you could also put some scotch tape on the "nut" of the core and draw a line on it. The caliper portion is pretty straight ...

A vernier caliper is going to be your friend for measuring in and out position of the shaft. Then you have to keep in mind which side of the pin your measuring from. Rotation is best measured in deg/radians. Take a piece of paper and wrap around the smaller diameter part of the sleeve and put markin...

Gunmetal might be a good start for mapping since the maze allows you to navigate most of the maze. it would help you get an understanding of the space you need to map and to refine your techniques for measuring rotation and shaft position. Silver should be attainable at some point....just need to be patient. There are other mazes that are significantly harder to aquire.

I use subtle little marks on the shaft to guide my hands on certain mazes which helps my thought process. I am however blessed with being able to see.
