you could do a sliding dove tail veritcally to cap off each side. what you want is a japanize puzzle box shelf (maybe).

Making your own maze on a shapeways shaft probably won't be a problem although I am not sure what element Chris used to justify his patent. All that being said if you ask Chris he probably would say you could make one. Chris is just that passionate and likes to share his Passion.

Forgot the update, kilian is doing really good. Blood values dropped for awhile but they are back up. He has been spending his time memorizing song names and bands of old school rock thank you pandora. He has a lot of energy but a lot more treatments to go, 2 years left.
