Do it like some puzzle boxes are made.

Two neo magnets on one set of corners, and then a ramped edge on the other side that, with enough pressure, can be pushed in to release the magnets and thus release the base. Inset the lid a bit on that side so it doesn't just slip out that way.

The project is now fully funded.

I am hoping to take one of my current wooden stands and make a slightly larger fiberglass version of it.

Resin is off white and fiber glass turns clear when resin'd, so it should look pretty cool when i get done...

The idea of a stand with a spot for the shaft is pretty cool. I'm still not sure which I would like better. I guess being that I have some obsessions also having my extremes displayed with the shaft out would be cool!
I feel like they would be more secure with the outer portion of the sleeve resting on the stand.

I still think standing up like cups and the base could be groved to hold the sleve and than a way to stand the shaft up

I guess the problem with moving the uprights further apart so the puzzle rests on the outer portion is that the stand won't hold the V2 sleeves. With the curved surfaces on the V2's it would push the uprights apart and may snap off. At least with it as it is, it is compatible with both types of sleeve. But I do agree that with the V1 it would have held them more securely.

As for doing a stand to display them standing up. They already stand up on their own, without any help?. I have to display them like that now so they don't roll off the shelf. Unless its so they can be displayed with the shaft removed, then it would have to be something with two pointy bits sticking up, one fat one and one thin. Fat one for the sleeve to sit on and a thin one which takes place of the draw bar that the core can be slid onto. (If that makes sense?)

Personally I think that the stand design with the two curves to display the sleeve and core separately is absolutely brilliant! Far more aesthetically pleasing than standing them on end.

Like I mentioned before though, the only problem I foresee here is that if you're showing the core on the stand like that, it means that the pins and the like won't be able to be kept in place, so they will need to be kept separately. It would be ideal if these parts could somehow be kept with the puzzles on the stands, because -as I'm sure we've all experienced at some point- they are incredibly easy to lose.
